In media we are starting our very own nonfiction animal research. Ask your child about the animal he/she has been researching.

We are also learning all about verbs. Verbs are action words...
Such as: read, dream, play, catch, run, skate
A super fun way to practice verbs is by playing an exciting game of charades.

Math: In math we are staring to learn to tell time. An important part of telling time is actually being able to identify the parts of a clock (minute had, hour hand and second hand).
In first grade we focus on telling time to the hour (9:00) and telling time to the half hour (9:30). Children will become familiar with telling time on both analog and digital clocks.

**Please remember to send in money or picture packets (if not paying for) for Spring Pictures. Pictures must be paid for if you are keeping them.

**Boxtop collections have started! Please send in your boxtops! Classrooms are having a competition to see who brings in the most. Our classroom will receive a gift card for the amount we collect.

READING: We will be stretching this reading unit over two weeks. There will be no new spelling words or sight words for the week of April 18th. We are doing this because of the testing that first graders will be participating in over the next two weeks. It is Spring and therefore it is time for the NWEA test again. This is the skills assessment the students take on the computers (in both reading and math).
Our scheduled time for reading is Wednesday, April 13th.
Our scheduled time for math is Tuesday, April 19th.

Scores for the assessments will be mailed home later in the year. This assessment allows us to see if each student is making adequate progress and it shows where he/she is performing compared to peers.

We are working on consonants /s/c, /j/g, and -dge.
(s, -ss, ce, ci-, j, -ge, gi-, -dge)
We will continue to write and read poems for National Poetry Month.

MATH: In math we are learning about money. The next two chapters focus on identifying pennies, nickels and dimes. We will be learning the value of pennies, nickels and dimes, counting groups of money to find a value and using different coin combinations to equal same amounts.

I hope to see everyone at the carnival on Saturday, April 16th!
